Ok I will be the first one to hold my hand up...I am simply not a shower person! For me there is nothing more satisfying than curling up in a lovely bubbly bath with a good book and a glass of wine (on weekends of course) and lying back in absolute comfort and relaxation. However it’s not just the tub that makes the bathroom a sanctuary in our homes so take a look at the 10 best bathroom accessories that are both practical and stylish.
Toothbrush Holder
Essential items such as toothbrush holders should not be overlooked when designing your bathroom interior. They sit pride of place next to our sinks and create a colourful and sculptural focal point within the room. If you love tradition then opt for crisp white porcelain or even jet black designs for a more modern take on a classic style or for a modern and minimal design choose Perspex designs with internal bubbles or wall mounted fixtures. I however have fallen in love with these nifty Toothbrush holders (left) that sterilise your brushes while they are in position!
Soap dish/dispenser
Another sink side accessories is the classic soap dish or dispenser that are a must have addition to any family, en suite or guest bathroom area. Soap dishes allow you to display any fancy artisan soaps and bars that you may have purchased and are simple to clean and maintain making them ideal for children’s and teenagers bathroom areas. Dispensers have seemed to rise in popularity lately with simple orb or rectangular designs looking great in refined and sophisticated bathrooms or more whacky, sculptural shapes such as star wars and superheroes making a unique and fun focal point in a contemporary wash room setting.
Towel Rail
Gone are the days of white plastic tubular rails and instead a new breed of heated and sculptural towel rails have taken over our bathroom interiors. Heated chrome rails are great for smaller bathroom interiors as they provide storage and warmth without the need for an additional radiator. For a classic style then why not select brass ornate pipes and plumbing and use these for displaying your towels. We love this safety pin towel rail (left) that would look great above a baby changing area for added visual fun.
Toilet roll holder
While they may not be the most glamorous of bathroom accessories the toilet roll holder is an essential item that can often be the focal point of your bathroom area. Traditional wall mounted or vertical floor storage designs look great in classic home interiors and work particularly well in guest bathrooms and en suites however if you are feeling more adventurous then why not create your very own toilet roll tree (right) that will create a feature piece of wall art as well as making sure that you never get caught out with an empty toilet roll in times of need.
Bath Mat
There is nothing worse than puddles of water on your bathroom floor but with such a vast range of bath mats available on the high street this can be completely avoided whilst adding a burst of colour and texture to your bathroom space. Looped and shag pile mats are an ever popular favourite due to their great absorbency and rich texture. Pebble style mats will look great in more natural spa style bathrooms for a laid back and calming ambiance. If you like a dash of fun in your bath space then choose some quirky ‘slogan’ mats that add a fresh contemporary feel to any bathroom interior.
Shower Curtain
Shower curtains may have dropped out of fashion for a while and became replaced by sleeker shower screens but now they are back and are readily available in a wide range of colours and styles to compliment your bathroom design. For a classic Mediterranean style then select mosaic prints and Greek key designs that look great in crisp white bathroom areas or for a more modern and fun finish select novelty shower curtains in bold abstract prints, landscape designs and themes for a bold and bright interior feel.
Storage Shelves
In my humble opinion, you can never have quite enough storage for all of your nik naks, toiletries and accessories but there are a few clever ways of adding extra storage to your bathroom without it feeling cluttered and overcrowded. Simple rattan baskets inserted into white painted shelving look great in a feminine bathroom interior and provides spacious storage for your bottles, razors and soap etc. Alternatively why not create some wall mounted storage such as these modern circular shelves (left) that are perfect for storing a wide range of rolled up towels in your chosen colour combinations.
Bathroom Mirror
It is a fact that the bathroom is the one place in the home where we spend the most time pampering and preening therefore it is essential that we find the right bathroom mirror to suit our needs. A simple oak framed design will look great in natural Swedish style bathrooms while a sleek silver or mirrored design can be accentuated with led lights and digital clocks for fabulous contemporary feel. If your prefer a more glamorous look then choose a black heavily carved baroque framed mirror that will create some period elegance in your boutique bathroom space.
Bath Tray
While you may remember the traditional bath tray from your grandparent’s house they have made a massive comeback this season due to their multifunctional practicality. From classic wooden designs to illuminating chrome or Perspex these fabulous trays provide a great space to rest a book (you wouldn’t believe how many times I dropped mine in before I invested in a bath tray) a glass of champagne or essential items such as a nail brush, soap and pumice for a neat and organised bathing space.
Flower Arrangements
Sometimes bathrooms can look a little plain and clinical so it is important to add a few elegant touches that makes the room personal to you and adds colour and femininity to the space. A simple floral arrangement will look great on a bathroom windowsill or storage cabinet and can be selected in crisp white, nautical blue or tropical shades that will give a relaxing ambiance to the room. Opt for colour co-ordinating vases or keep your old perfume bottles (right) and make a grouped arrangement of single flowers that is elegant and glamorous.
