There are some interior design features and ideas of the 1990s that we would probably rather forget however there are some elements of this design that have started to make a comeback across the designer and high street stores this season. 90s MACULINITY is a sleek and sophisticated style of interior design that brings together linear shapes, slick surfaces and deep colour palettes to create an opulent, retro interior feel.
Opt for colour palettes that are dark and rich yet minimal in their appearance. Simple monochrome colour schemes work well with this look as well as deep navy, diver blue and grey colour schemes that will create a striking visual look in any room of the home. If you are opting for a wallpaper design then stick with classic 1990s geometric patterns and accent a single feature wall or alcove area. Can anyone remember sponge painting their walls? If so then you may want to add a nod to this technique with some grey and white whitewashed or marble effect wallpaper that will look great on a main feature wall.
You can add extra pattern to the room with some printed cushions and curtains in a matching geometric pattern or throw in some classic satin cushions in silver and black or marbled patterns that will create some masculine glamour in a living room or bedroom area. Don’t be shy to mix and match colours, patterns and materials and opt for a curved or straight edged sofa or box style armchair in deep black or charcoal leather or suede for comfort and style.
Select furniture items that combine 90s opulence with masculine shapes and materials to create a centrepiece within your chosen room. Glass dining tables and coffee tables will look great with chrome style frames and bases while seamless glass side tables and bedsides can be partnered with sleek mirrored wardrobes and chests of drawers for a flamboyant finish that is sophisticated and refined. For a more striking visual finish then add some black glass or black high gloss furniture items with chrome accents and handles that will create a focal point in a minimal white painted room.
Add classic 1990s accessories to your room that will create a blast from the past yet still provide a stylish finish within the room. A wall mounted corded telephone will look great mounted next to a side table or console particularly in a black or silver finish. Fake flowers sound like something that you would only find in your grandparent’s sitting room however in the 90s they were an essential feature of any room. Opt for a simple white vase and black orchids for a masculine take on this trend. When looking for lighting then the more glamorous the better; opt for Hollywood style dressing table mirrors with lit up frames and singular orb shaped pendant lights that can hung in the centre of the room.
