It was voted as 2014s ‘Colour of the year’ by Pantone and this year the radiant ORCHID colour scheme is remaining as popular as ever due to its balance of elegance and vibrancy. This sumptuous purple/pink tone works wonderfully in both classic and contemporary home interiors and will add a splash of uplifting colour to even the blandest of interior settings.
Colour Palettes
The bold yet dusky tones of orchid colour hues make them a versatile and stylish partner to a vast range of light and dark colour combinations. For a fresh and feminine interior feel then partner your orchid colour palette with crisp white, and dove grey for a soft and subtle combination of colour and neutrality. For a more modern and sleek interior finish then opt for orchid and black with a hint of pewter for a glamorous and designer interior feel. A combination of purple colour tones such as orchid, lavender and wisteria will give a spring like ambiance that will brighten up a dining room, bedroom or living room area. If you prefer a more tropical interior theme then partner your bold orchid tones with aqua blue, duck egg and pastel pink for a rainbow of colour that is bright and uplifting.
Cushions
Orchid cushions are a must have addition to any home interior as they provide a simple and cost effective way to add colour and texture to your living room or bedroom area. For a classical and period style feel then opt for luxurious velvet fabrics with tassel detailing and bolster shapes that will look stunning along a French style sofa or chaise lounge for a pop of visual detail. Sleek orchid satin or simple linen will look great laid upon both dark and light upholstered seats and bedding and can be layered with bold patterned designs for a variation in tone and style. Opt for bold orchid prints for a fresh and modern feel or geometric stripes and chevrons that will look great in a crisp white and orchid colour combination
Upholstery
Bold and vibrant coloured upholstery is hot on trend in 2015 and is a fabulous way of adding colour to a minimal or neutral space. A crisp white or black painted dining set can be transformed into a personalised space with an air of designer flamboyance with some plain velvet or satin orchid seat pads that will introduce a simple accent tone that can be carried through into your accessories. A plain and uninteresting headboard can be easily transformed into a colourful and eye-catching feature using some plain or patterned orchid fabric for a burst of fresh colour that looks wonderful against a plain white wall. For a chic and feminine feature then select an elegant occasional chair, upholster in a classic floral, orchid coloured fabric and place in the corner of your living room, bedroom or dressing room area for a zoned area of colour and texture.
Accessories
The warm and vibrant tone of orchid makes it an ideal choice for accenting your home with a selection of colourful accessories and ornaments. Vases, bowls and candle holders will look fabulous along a crisp white or black painted mantelpiece and will create a centralised focal point in your living room area. Orchid tinted glassware will also create an illuminating pop of colour that works well in areas of strong light such as windowsills and sideboards. White, black and silver accessories can also be used to accentuate the rich colour of your orchid painted decor. And of course how could you finish your interior without a nod to the flower itself. A tall and elegant orchid will look amazing taking pride of place in an alcove area or table top, and of course if you’re not particularly green fingered (like me) there is a wide range of artificial orchid plants available on the high street.
Furniture
The advantage of selecting bold colours like orchid as your background colour means that when it comes to selecting furniture you are completely spoilt for choice. Black painted furniture or dark hardwood items will give a rich and glamorous finish in your home and creates a cosy and warming space that has an air of period opulence. Eye-catching silver leaf furniture items will create a shimmering and glimmering statement against the zesty orchid backdrop and look particularly striking in a bedroom or dressing room area. For me however there is nothing more beautiful than a crisp and fresh selection of white painted furniture that will create a feminine and delicate area against the bold and visually enticing tones of the orchid coloured surroundings.
