How To Create Cheap And Effective Wall Art

When we think of adding finishing touches to our interior walls many of us always opt for traditional features such as mirrors, paintings or photos to create a focal point in our home. Whilst these ideas do look good and compliment our homes they can often be expensive to purchase or can not quite provide the personalised feel that many of us like within our homes.

If you are looking to try something different and have a little spare time on your hands then why not try out some of these cheap and easy DIY wall art ideas and create a unique and fabulous feature wall within your home.

1. Cork Art

This fun design will look great in a kitchen or dining room area, and creates a textural as well as visual appeal on your interior walls. Collect a range of old and new wine bottle corks (you may need to ask friends and family for a hand with this lol) and then get yourself a glue gun and get creative. You can stick the corks inside a frame or stick them together to form a simple rectangle or circle design or why not have some more fun and stick them together to form a wine bottle or wine glass design.

2. Postcard Art

Post card art work is a great alternative to photographs and can be used to tell a story about you and your family. Firstly choose your postcards, these can be your favourite books (left), destinations that you have visited, or would like to visit, vintage post cards or famous landmarks. Stick your cards to a MDF board or canvas and hang on a central interior wall.

3. Wallpaper or Fabric Art

Sometimes it is hard to find a picture that matches the style or colour scheme within your home but there is a simple answer to your problems...Wallpaper! Wallpaper art work is a great way of complimenting your current interior and adding a focal point to your home, Take a selection of small wallpaper samples from your local DIY store and glue or staple them to some small, large or mixed sized MDF squares for an array of pattern and colour. This look can also be achieved using scraps of fabric that can be co-ordinated or contrasted against your cushions and curtains.

4. Frames

Who said that frames can't make a statement without anything inside them? A carefully arranged set of modern or traditional frames can create a visually stunning piece of wall art that can be tailored to your exact requirements. Purchase a selection of frame sizes, or use some old frames that you have lying around the house. You can also find some in the sale areas of shops with some small marks or chips (this doesn't matter as they will be painted). Firstly plan out your design on your chosen wall and then decide on your colour choice, you can opt for single or multiple colours depending on your interior style. Prime and paint your frames and then hang in your chosen design; this can be flat to the wall or layered (using glue) for an eye-catching 3D effect.

5. Clipboards

This fun idea works really well in a children's room or kitchen area and creates an interactive area that all the family can enjoy. Purchase some cheap clipboards from a stationary store and paint them with your chosen colour selection; they can be all the same or multicoloured for a vibrant pop of colour. Cut some wording out of some card or MDF (we think 'Art' or 'To Do' work well), and then paint in matching colours. Arrange on the wall in your chosen design, this can be a linear formation or an abstract design and then add your finishing touches. Clip your children's latest artwork, shopping lists, postcards or appointment cards to your boards for a great, tailor made alternative to a traditional notice board.
