How To Create A Greek Style Interior

Greece is one of my favourite holiday destinations and one I have visited many many times throughout the years. The cool and calm surroundings and laid back life style makes Greece an appealing and relaxing place to visit.

Steeped in History and Mythology Greek interiors create a balance between classic style and coastal colours to provide a serene yet luxurious feel that is instantly recognisable due to its distinct features and designs.

Colour Palette

Greek interiors reflect the colours that can be seen right outside their windows. Cool and calming royal blue and azure reflect the clear blue skies and crisp tones of the sea whilst neutral whites and pale grey represent the scattering of houses and buildings that are a recognisable feature of Mediterranean landscapes. This coastal colour palette will create a laid back and summery feel in any room of the home.

Greek Key

No Greek interior would be complete without the famous 'Greek Key' design. This simple yet eye catching pattern can be traced back to the buildings of ancient Greece and has been seamlessly transferred into contemporary items and designs. This design looks fabulous on cushions, curtains and rugs but also creates a great visual detail on photo frames, wall art and mirrors to give an historic and luxurious finish to your interior space.

Busts and Sculptures

Another feature of Greek interior design that gives a nod to the history of the country is the use of busts and sculptures as key accessories within the home. Replica busts are usually crafted from plaster or polymer, however more luxurious items can be purchased in traditional marble or bronze. The figures that are depicted are usually taken from the characters of Greek mythology or the Gods and Goddesses themselves. These busts look wonderful on a lamp table or plinth, creating a focal point in any interior.

Olive Trees

Olives and olive oil are Greece's most fruitful produce. With groves and groves of olive trees throughout the country they are a thing of beauty as well as function. These beautiful and elegant trees are not only tied to the exterior of the home as they make a fabulous feature in a crisp Greek interiors and can be potted in a traditional or mosaic pot that will compliment the tones of your interior space. These trees look great in a kitchen, living room or conservatory space and are an ideal way of bringing the outdoor space through into your interior as a reflection of the exterior landscape.

Furniture

Less is more when it comes to Greek style furniture designs. Plain oak or beech designs sit perfectly among the neutral interior colour palettes and once again create a sense of bringing the outdoors, indoors. Alternatively for a more crisp and linear interior style, opt for clean white furniture that will seamlessly slide into the sleek white interior colour scheme. Furniture is often decorated with the simple Greek key pattern for added visual detail or can be left in its natural form for a more rustic and natural feel.
