As the winter months draw closer, interior design trends start to become more moody and dramatic with deep and dark colour schemes and opulent accessories. While many people shy away from dark colours in their home interior, this look can actually create a cosy and snug ambiance that is perfect for curling up and relaxing during the colder months.

Choose rich and opulent colour schemes featuring striking period colour tones or modern moonlight colours that will look great on a feature wall or as an overall palette. Deep navy works well with complimentary tonal blues or grey tones for a stormy midnight palette that looks particularly great in living rooms and bedroom interiors. For a more natural dark interior then why not select deep forest green and rich chocolate colour palettes that can be given a glamorous edge with some gold or copper accents. Dark purple shades look great with dark charcoal and pewter tones to create a colourful yet cosy feel with a hint of period drama. Team a dark colour scheme with co-ordinating baroque wallpaper for a classic look or branch or bold floral designs for a botanical charm. For a more modern feel then select a contemporary geometric print design that will look great on a large feature wall.

Velvet is the perfect fabric for creating a deep and dark ambiance in any room of the home and is reminiscent of traditional gothic interior design. Dark and heavy velvet curtains will look amazing draped in dramatic swathes along a window or patio door and can be tied with tassel, bead or metal tie backs for added opulence. Team these curtains with satin and velvet cushions in matching dark colour tones featuring a variety of period patterns, embroidered floral designs of flocked prints that will create a focal point on a plain seating or sleeping area. For an added focal point include a large rug in the centre of the room in a rich bold colour scheme and pattern or a textural chenille tufted rug with hints of metallic fibres for added opulence.

Alternatively for a more modern take on a dark interior design, you could opt for black high gloss furniture items that will add a sleek designer feel to your room. Black glass furniture can be used to create a modern or retro feel within your chosen room and looks great mixed and matched with clear glass or mirrored furniture for added detail and variation.  Add some dark pewter or oxidised metal accessories to the room or for added drama include a large black chandelier in the centre of the room that can be co-ordinated with black table lamps and photo frames for a deep and rich ambiance.
