Most Hated Interior Design Trends

Ever wondered what the worst interior design trends of all time are? Well; Samsung put together a team of design experts from UK interior design publications such as Wallpaper, Ideal Home, and House Beautiful in order to create a shortlist of what are deemed as the worst interior design trends of the past half century. 2,000 UK adults were given the choice to vote for which they considered the worst of the worst and these are the results:

Toilet rugs/furry toilet seat covers — 44 %

Not only but incredibly unhygienic

Taxidermy — 39 %

Dead animals peering down on you...no thank you!

Avocado bathrooms — 32 %

We may like them on toast or in a salad but we definitely don’t miss them in the bathroom!

Floral chintz furniture — 28 %

They looked elegant in our grandparents house but is there any way of making this furniture look cool in modern homes?

Waterbeds — 25 %

Waking up on the floor in a pool of water with a waterfall cascading through the ceiling… I think we’ll give this trend a miss!

Artex walls and ceilings — 25%

It may have been the in thing in the 70s and 80s but we think that’s where this trend should have stayed.

Carpeted bathrooms — 25 %

Damp, soggy flooring that smells musty and stale? Yuk! No thank you!

Rag rolled walls — 23 %

They made it look easy on TV make over shows but lets be honest it was a lot of time and effort and ended up looking a mess!

Tribal carvings, masks, and wall hangings — 23 %

This look can be nice when done in the right way but overdo it and you may end up looking like your living on the set of Jumanji.

Stone cladding — 19 %

Stone cladding outside the home, yes!….on your internal wall...big no no!

Animal print anything — 19 %

Less glamour and luxury and more Bet Lynch on Safari.

Inspirational quote art stencilled on the walls — 19 %

We all like a quote now and again but bringing out those stencils on every possible wall space is a little extreme.

Carpeted or textured walls — 19 %

Way too much going on visually, enough to give you a migraine! Keep the texture to the floor and not the walls.

Beaded curtains — 19 %

No….just No!

Living room bars — 19 %

It might have worked for Del Boy but not in your average home!

Bidets — 17 %

What do they actually do? And does anyone really know how to use them?

Round beds — 17 %

These should be reserved for the likes of Love Island and nowhere else!

Professional family portraits — 15 %

You go in with the best intention but they turn out looking like you’re a family of serial killers.

Shabby chic anything — 15 %

Anything with the word ‘shabby’ in it should be given a miss.

Shag pile carpets — 14 %

Even the word sounds disgusting!

Wicker furniture indoors — 12 %

Should be reserved for the garden or at a push a conservatory room.

Wallpaper borders — 12 %

They looked nice once upon a time but now too much fuss and bother.

Curtain pelmets — 11 %

Why...just why?

TV cupboards — 11 %

Oh I know why don’t we build an enclosed cupboard for the thing we watch the most?

Stencilled walls or decals — 11 %

I have to be honest I still don’t mind this trend when done in the right way and not covering every spare inch of wall space!

Do you agree with this list or are you still partial to several of the trends that they put forward?
