How to Create a Snow White Inspired Home

This year marked the 60th Anniversary of the Disneyland Resort and to join in with the fun and celebrations, over the next few weeks we will be taking a look at stylish interior spaces that are inspired by some of your favourite Disney characters. From the rich opulence of Beauty and The Beast to the aquatic elegance of The Little Mermaid, these interiors will create an element of fun whilst still maintaining a chic and stylish appearance. To begin our journey into Disney interiors let’s begin with a classic fairy tale that has been long adored by children and adults alike – SNOW WHITE.

The key elements of creating a Snow White inspired interior centres around a balance between cosy and welcoming woodland style and dark and glamorous sophistication.  You can choose to concentrate on the warm and rustic elements of Snow Whites character or the deep and mysterious nature of the villainous Evil Queen. If you cannot choose between your light and dark side then why not create a mixture of two styles that can be used simultaneous within one room.

Snow White

To create a haven that is reflective of Snow White’s kind and gentle nature then recreate her cottage home interior with a rustic yet elegant wallpaper such as a forest print, floral or bird print design in vintage colour tones with hints of botanical blues, pinks and greens. Choose a warm and cosy colour palette that reflects the woodland space with rich cream, sage green, cocoa and taupe and add accents of feminine colours that will create an inviting and delicate finish.

Add a nod to Snow White’s woodland creature friends with ornamentation, wall art and cushions featuring classic badger, squirrel and fox images. Select  authentic wooden cuckoo clocks and classic woodland artwork in traditional mediums and display in a solid wood or shabby chic style frame above a fireplace or seating area. Decorate your natural wood shelves, mantelpieces and tables with small animal figurines (or dwarves) and create floral arrangements using wild flowers and ferns in simple glass vases. Hang ornate bird cages above a window or place on a side table for an elegant and natural focal point and create a cosy and relaxing seating or sleeping area using woodland animal cushions in simple cotton and linen fabrics and soft and neutral colour palettes.

When selecting furniture items for your home opt for classic and natural materials or soft and elegant painted designs that will create a fresh and feminine feel.  Select tables and shelving made from textural or reclaimed wood or select farmhouse style oak furniture for a slightly more polished look. If you wish to create a slightly more ‘fairytale’ design then opt for cream and white French style items or invest in a statement bed frame featuring four posts that are sculpted from tree trunks with spindle type branches that will create a focal point within your bedroom space.

Evil Queen

To embody the world of the Evil Queen, create a design that oozes glamour and darkness with a hint of period style flamboyance. Choose a monochrome colour scheme with accents of rich grey and red that will create a dramatic look in any room of the home. Use white or dove grey as your main colour to prevent your chosen room looking too dark or overcrowded and add accents and zoned areas of bold black or red to specific walls and furnishings. Select wallpapers that will make a real statement on a feature wall such as bold Rococo prints, Fleur de Lys and rose pattern designs and place them on a chimney breast wall, alcove or behind a bed frame for maximum visual impact.

Ornamentation and artwork should be dark yet intriguing in nature. Add bold red and black candlesticks along a heavily carved mantelpiece and add bowls of apples in the centre of your dining table or sideboard as a nod to the magical poisoned apple. Red apple ornaments and vases of red roses will create an air of glamour and mystery as well as providing that all important dash of colour in your interior space. Add cushions in Baroque style monochrome designs and add bright red cushions with rose effect detailing or apple print imagery that will look great scattered along a black upholstered sofa, chaise lounge or heavily carved bed frame.

Of course no Evil Queen should be without her magic mirror which should be displayed in pride of place above a fireplace, sideboard or dressing table. Choose an intricate heavily carved frame in rich black or silver or a more distinctive style such as this wall mounted design that looks like a handheld mirror that gives a classic fairytale style to your home. Complete this look with a selection of French style, black painted furniture that features heavy and ornate carvings. Opt for statement items such as a large dining table, bed frame, dresser and wardrobes for an opulent and palatial finish.
