How to Create a Tasteful Halloween Interior

Boo!!!! Did I scare you?

It’s that time of year again when the ghosts and ghouls come out to play and adults and children alike come together to dress up and celebrate the fun and festivities of Halloween! Everyone is dusting off the skeletons and fangs and bulk buying pumpkins in preparation for the big night.

But Halloween doesn’t have to be all about bats, zombies and skulls. You can enjoy the ambiance and character of Halloween using more tasteful and elegant home accessories and decorations that will give a hint of Halloween without the horror!

Pumpkins

In my eyes you simply cannot celebrate Halloween without displaying a pumpkin or two inside or outside your home as this tradition is the emblem of Halloween itself. While gathering your friends and family to carve ghoulish and silly faces into your pumpkins is a social part of the celebrations there are some alternatives for those who prefer a more subtle nod to this artistic ritual. Why not paint your pumpkins to match your home interior? White and cream look bright and eye-catching while black gold and gold will pay homage to more traditional Halloween colour schemes. Writing phrases on your pumpkins such as ‘Boo’, ‘Trick or Treat’ or ‘Happy Halloween’ can also give a fun and unique look within your home. If you prefer a more fairytale feel then decorate your painted pumpkins with some crystals or glitter for a bright and shimmering Cinderella style finish.

Lanterns

Lanterns are a great way of showcases any Halloween themed or church candles and provide a practical windbreak particularly if you are displaying them in an outside space or garden. For a spooky whilst still tasteful look then opt for iron or pewter designs that can be complimented with a simple white pillar candle. Alternatively select a gold or brass lantern and place an orange or black candle inside for a small burst of colour. Turn of the lights and allow your lanterns to create a swathe of ambient light that will cast beautiful shadows in windows and across your fireplace area.

 Autumnal influences

I love nothing more than seeing the trees start to change colour and the autumn produce starting to creep into stores and supermarkets. The rich and warm tones of autumn create a cosy feel in the home and also give a nod to the typical orange and black theme of the majority of Halloween items. Take a walk in your local park and collect some conkers, leaves and twigs that are rich orange, red and brown and purchase some miniature varnished pumpkin and gourds that can be used to decorate your home inside bowls, glass vases and candle holders. If you like the idea of using lanterns but are not keen on candles then fill them up with a collection of twigs and leaves and add some small battery powered fairy lights for a touch of autumn elegance.

 Tableware

If you’re throwing a Halloween party this year, your table does not need to consist of cauldrons, Gothic goblets and paper plates. Why not purchases a set of tableware that is not only suitable for Halloween but can be used all year round? Black glass and crockery is bang on trend this season and is readily available in high street stores. It provides a sleek and glamorous feel to your home interior whilst still providing a dark and spooky feel to your Halloween table. Alternatively why not opt for a selection of gold tableware that will look fabulous alongside any orange Halloween accessories and will create a warm and autumnal focal point within the home.

 Shabby chic signs

Shabby chic signs and plaques are perfect alternatives to typical haunted house and gravestone designs that are popular during the Halloween period. Classic white distressed signs look fabulous in kitchen and dining room areas and can feature vintage style pumpkins, broomsticks and witches hat images for a quirky yet stylish appearance. Chalkboard designs are also great this time of year as you can personalise them to your exact tastes with a traditional Halloween greeting, a funny pun or joke or a tailor made message for your guests or Trick or Treaters. Add glittery or gingham patterned bows in Halloween colours for added detail and creativity.
