If you love a bold and innovative interior that thinks outside of the box then why not take a look at this season’s Abstract interior design trend. This idea incorporates bold colour palettes and unique shapes and designs to create an interior space that is functional and comfortable but has all the style and visual impact of a modern art gallery. Minimal or modernist home interiors can often look sparse and unloved but with a little twist of abstract style they can be transformed into an area of visual delight that is unique and personal to you.
Abstract art uses form, colour and shape to create a visual representation that sits outside the realm of reality. One of the easiest ways to create an abstract space within the home is with a bold and eye-catching selection of wall art that looks outside of the world of traditional landscape and portrait art. Pictures may be loosely based on a vista, object or scene however using dynamic forms of brushwork and colour are painted to look like something entirely different. If you prefer a splash of colour on your walls then select bold and vibrant designs that capture the fun and vivaciousness of abstract art or for a more sophisticated design select chic monochrome designs that look fabulous against a crisp white or grey painted wall.
When selecting furniture for your abstract home; choose items that take traditional designs and transform them into something that is visually artistic and more stylised than their original form. The idea of abstract art was derived from the Greek philosopher Plato who believed that the highest form of beauty lies in geometry, not in the forms of reality. Curvaceous wooden designs look particularly impressive with scoop and wave style chairs and stools creating a balance of natural reality and modern sculpture. Angular and modernist furniture designs and geometric shelving with interlocking, 3D designs will create an area of visual detail that will become a focal point against a plain painted feature wall. Opt for natural varnished wood or sleek white or black paint finishes for a classic abstract look.
Lighting designs are a perfect way of creating a sculptural focal point in the home and abstract designs provide a fabulously creative alternative to classic lampshades and ceiling pendants. Select a unique modernist inspired chandelier with varying sizes and angles of geometric shapes with sharp angles and contrasting colour combinations. Black and gold or black and white look particularly striking while crisp white with an array or vivid neon colours will create an area of colour against a plain painted ceiling space. For a nod to traditional lighting design, select a floor lamp with classic conical light shades but combine them with a contemporary multi arm base that can be used to create specific zones of light within the home.
Fabrics can be kept as simple or as crazy as you wish. For a sleek and streamlined abstract style then select clean white fabrics and combine them with chrome or black framework or natural unfinished wood for a nod to the Scandinavian style of interior design. Alternatively for a more subtle injection of pattern select striped fabrics or geometric prints and use them in specific zoned areas such as an occasional chair, sofa or rug for a splash of colour and texture. Cushions make a fabulous alternative to a piece of abstract wall art and can be placed in an organised or spontaneous arrangement along a sofa or bed. Select bold designs in a combination of neon, black and white colour palettes and combine stylised triangle prints with stripes, block colours and metallic elements for a truly diverse and eye-catching finish.
