We are feeling super eggcited about Easter this week, so what better time to celebrate one of the hottest trends of 2015 – Egg shaped home accessories and design. ‘Ovoid’ or ‘Elliptical’ shapes give a wonderful visual softness and curvaceous style to any home interior and are a fabulous alternative to traditional straight edged furniture items and room shapes. We have selected 5 Eggstra special egg shaped items that will look fabulous in both modern and traditional homes.
Egg Chair
Ever since its first appearance in the 1950s and 1960s the ‘Egg’ shaped chair has seen a multitude of changes and incarnations but has always retained its distinctive style and shape. Cosy rattan and wicker style designs look fabulous in conservatory and summerhouse interiors and give a natural beauty to both neutral and bold interiors. For a truly retro look then select a swinging or hanging egg chair that can be suspended from the ceiling in the corner of a living room or bedroom space for a bold and striking focal point. Choose typical 1960s colour combinations such as monochrome, crisp white and red, or warm orange and fuchsia with a blend of plastic and fabric materials.
Faberge Eggs
The first name that springs to mind when someone says ‘interior design’ and ‘eggs’ is the instantly recognisable ‘Faberge’. The distinctive style of the famous Faberge egg creates an air of luxury elegance and artistic design in any home interior. Originally Created by Peter Carl Faberge between 1885 and 1917 the first Imperial eggs were given to Russian Tsars as Easter gifts for their wives and mothers. Items from the original collection can be seen in some of the major art collections in the world including the Kremlin and Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal collection. These flamboyant and decorative eggs often feature bold and elegant colours with accents of gold, silver and jewels that create an eye-catching feature on a sideboard or dresser. While the majority of us would need to sell our soul for an original piece or indeed a modern Faberge design there are many replicas and high street variations available at a reasonable and affordable price.
Lighting
A home interior can be instantly transformed with a statement light shade that will not only create a zoned area of light but will also create a focal point within your chosen room. Traditional candelabras and chandeliers are a great choice for creating an eye-catching centrepiece within your home but can often look a little repetitive and unoriginal. A fabulous alternative is a gorgeous egg shaped chandelier design that will give a fresh and contemporary take on classic items. The curvaceous shape will look fabulous above a dining table or seating area and will create a luxurious and opulent ambiance in both neutral and bold interior decors. Choose simple, clear crystal designs for a nod to period style light fittings or opt for black crystal designs against crisp white interiors and bold jewelled tones for an eastern inspired interior look.
Candles
There is something extremely relaxing and romantic about an arrangement of candles as they create visual colour and shape along a sideboard or mantelpiece and create soft ambient light that is perfect for living room or bedroom interiors. Ovoid shaped candelabras will look particularly elegant as a centrepiece at a dinner party or meal for two and a selection of egg shaped tea light holders will create an eye-catching focal point that can be colour co-ordinated to your current home decor for a complimentary accent tone. If you would prefer a more fun and funky accessory for your home then why not check out these quirky egg candles (right) that feature an orange yolk centre that will run down the outer edges when burnt for a nod to a classic breakfast of egg and soldiers.
Furniture
The elegant egg shape is not just restricted to accessories and lighting, it can also be included in furniture designs and sculptural items that will create an artistic centrepiece in the home. A stunning glass coffee table with a curvaceous egg shaped base will give a perfect balance of soft and natural shapes and sleek modern style. Egg shaped chests and bookcases will also make a great alternative to traditional rectangular styles and will create the illusion of additional space in smaller home interiors. Ovoid baths and sinks will give a fresh and boutique feel to any bathroom area and can be further complimented with elliptical tiles and flooring for added softness and visual detail.
