How To Create Texture In Your Home Interior

Even with the use of colour and tone, our interiors can sometimes lack a sense depth and visual contrast. This season is all about tactile fabrics, wall art and furniture that will create a textural finish in your chosen room. Multidimensional tones and textures not only create a visually attractive finish but provide functional warmth and an illusion of spatial balance within your home.

Cushions provide the perfect solution for creating depth and texture in your home interior as they can be mixed and matched and layered to create a variation in colour, print and fabric. Choose co-ordinating and complimentary colour tones such as monochrome and grey, chocolate and gold or neutral beige and cream to tie all your styles together. Layer satin and velvet cushions with soft faux fur and mohair and add knitted or quilted designs or beaded and sequined cushions for a splash of glamour that looks fabulous in a bedroom interior.

This layering technique can also be used when selecting a rug for your chosen interior space. If you have a wooden, tiled or stone floor, choose a look and finish that will directly contrast against the hardness of the floor such as faux fur, shag pile or sheepskin. If your room is already carpeted then you can create texture using fabric, colour and pattern. If your carpet is dark then select a light tone of rug with interwoven detailing or 3D effect prints that will stand out in the centre of the room. If you have a neutral carpet then select a dark or boldly coloured rug with a shaggy texture that will co-ordinate with your interior decor but make a statement against the plain floor area.

Wall cladding and tiles make a great alternative to wallpaper and can add tactile detail to a feature wall or statement area. If you wish to create a warm and cosy cabin style interior then try cladding a long plain wall or a chimney breast and alcove space in rustic untreated wood cladding to give a visually detailed finish that can be partnered with co-ordinating furniture items. You can also create an exposed stone or bare brick wall for a more metropolitan loft style interior design. In a bathroom or kitchen area, use multidimensional tiles such as mosaic, metallic or glittery designs or for a more Mediterranean feel, use inlayed pebbles with natural cream grouting to give a rugged yet eye-catching finish that looks great partnered with a wide range of interior colour choices.

For me there is nothing more inviting than a soft and cosy bed with lashings of soft fabrics where you can curl up and relax. There are numerous ways in which to create texture on your bed space, firstly separate each element of your bed by selecting a base sheet, top sheet, duvet, cover and two sets of cushions for added depth. Keep your base sheet, top sheet and rear pillow plain in a soft cotton or satin fabric then add your texture with your duvet and main pillow cases. Select a satin cover with beaded embroidered, sequined detail and metallic elements or a ruffled or boucle style design that is visually dimensionally and textural to the touch. Chunky knitted covers look great in the colder months and can be combined with a soft faux fur throw for added detail.

Furniture can often look a little plain and can blend into the background of the home without being noticed. If you wish to create a textural statement with your furniture choice then there are many designs and styles that will create a focal point in your chosen space. Heavily carved French style designs feature dramatic floral carvings and curvaceous shapes that can be given added depth using a dark black or metallic paint finish. Select mirrored furniture items with faceted drawer and door fronts that will not only create a sense of space but will provide a rich depth against a plain painted feature wall.  Select items with natural or rough wood finishes, embossed metallic accents or try your hand at some decoupage for added colour and pattern.
