How to Create the Perfect Autumn Interior

While autumn may not be the best month for weather, it is a wonderful time of year to celebrate all the warm and cosy tones of nature and embrace the chance to snuggle up with textural furnishings and inviting home decor. This week we have scouted out ideas and accessories that will transform any home into a stylish Autumnal retreat.

Choose colour schemes that are rich and cosy and reflect the landscape of the changing season. Select gorgeous burnt orange, pumpkin and terracotta and place alongside cosy cream, mocha and chocolate for a warm and enveloping feel. Buttermilk, mustard and red also make a great combination to bring a sense of cosiness into an otherwise neutral space. If you prefer more subtle tones then opt for clotted cream, glacial blues or mauve to give a hint of colour in smaller home interiors.

Get inventive with your home accessories and utilise the elements of nature that are in abundance this time of year. I adore these fabulous storm jars and vases that can be filled with a plethora of autumnal items and will look fabulous on a sideboard or as a centrepiece for a seasonal lunch or dinner party. Fill the jars with items such as acorns, leaves, miniature gourds or pumpkins, cinnamon sticks and conkers and add a pillar style candle to the centre for added warmth. Finish the jars with some twine or burlap bows or some rich orange and red ribbons for an elegant visual finish.

Mood lighting is a great way of creating a cosy ambiance within your home during the colder month. Ditch your ceiling lights and traditional lamps in favour of softer or more visually subtle illuminations that are in keeping with your seasonal interior design. A large vase of twigs and branches looks great placed on a sideboard or at floor level and can be intertwined with soft glow fairy lights for a woodland inspired home accessory. Storm lanterns also look great this time of year and make a lovely focal point on a mantelpiece or fireplace area. Opt for plain wood, grey, pewter, bronze and gold designs and fill with fairy lights or a large church candle for a warm ambient light.

If you are looking to make a bold statement in your home this season then why not select visually striking wallpaper that will encompass an autumnal feel and provide a feature wall within your chosen room. Tartan print wallpapers are a hot trend this Autumn/Winter and look great in any room of the home while delicate branch and tree designs will reflect the changing foliage of the surrounding landscape and come in simple monochrome or more subtle creamy hues that can be partnered with a wide range of accent colours in your chosen living space. If you prefer a more subtle hint of pattern then why not opt for some wall decals that are in keeping with the autumnal theme such as a bird on a branch, leaf prints and acorns for a chic and elegant look.

No autumn home would be complete without an assortment of cosy throws and cushions to create a functional and stylish focal point within your living room or bedroom interior. Opt for soft fleece fabrics, wools and knits or faux fur that will provide a snug place to curl up, relax and hide from the cold. Select colours such as orange, mustard, red and burgundy and display alongside more neutral cream, antique white and taupe tones for variation and visual impact. Choose traditional or classic patterns and prints such as plaid and tartan, tribal or leaf print designs that will give a stylish finish against a plain seating area or bed set.
