There is nothing better than spending time with your family. With all of us living such busy lives these days it is often difficult for everyone to get together to enjoy some quality family time. One solution is to create a stylish and functional family room where you can chill out and relax, enjoy a movie, play games or even work out! Whatever activities, hobbies or recreations your family enjoy you can incorporate them into your decor and design to create a multifunctional and enjoyable space.
Lights, Camera... Action!
If your family is anything like mine then you are sure to spend at least one night a week watching a new movie or an old favourite with your partner or children. So why not create a cinema-style room in your home where you can enjoy a relaxed and fun film experience with all the family. Firstly choose a central main wall to display your large widescreen TV, or if you have limited space then use a compact or corner TV unit to house your TV set. Add a surround sound system for that classic cinema sound and then select some armchairs, sofas and bean bags for a cosy and comfortable seating area. For added fun add a small fridge with soft drinks and beers and create a small bar area where you can have some sweets, crisps and popcorn for a movie night treat.
Fun and Games
Games rooms make a great addition to any family home as they provide a fun getaway from busy everyday activities. Make the rooms a balance between adult and childhood styles with a classic grey or white colour scheme and add fun comic book artwork or retro toy posters for a quirky and detailed look. Add a pool, Foosball or ping pong table and create a shelving area where you can display your favourite classic board games such as Monopoly, Pictionary and Cluedo. Place a darts board and chalkboard on one of the larger walls and make sure you have a stereo or docking system available for some background music. You can also place a sofa bed in this interior space for any unexpected sleepovers by your children’s friends.
Work and Study
Unfortunately, our homes are not all about relaxing and having fun. More often than not we find ourselves with work to bring home, computer data to be uploaded or a mountain of homework and revision to tackle. Instead of fighting for the laptop or dining table, why not create a multifunctional office room where all members of the family can work together without getting under each other's feet. Separate the room into specified areas for adults and children with multiple desks, plug points and tables. Create personalised storage boxes or stationery holders for each person and enough seating to accommodate every member of the family (so there are no arguments).
Let’s get Physical!
Doctors and health experts are telling us over and over again how important it is to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, however, how many of us actually do it? Our lack of exercise often comes down to having little time, no childcare or no money to afford the often extortionate gym memberships. So why not bring the gym into your home with a functional family sports room where adults and children can exercise together or in their own separate spaces. Place all electronic machinery such as treadmills, bikes and cross trainers in one section of the room and then place soft foam flooring tiles in the rest of the room for the perfect space to weight train, perform yoga or stretch. These floor tiles make this space perfect for children to practice their gymnastics, dancing, kickboxing or rugby tackles in a safe environment where they can be monitored while you work out!
