Stripes and spots have always been popular patterns in interior design but this season they have given way to a new geometric design that maintains the simplicity of classic candy stripes and breathes a breath of fresh air into a neutral interior space – Chevrons.
These elegant angular stripes form a straight edged, wavelike pattern that creates visual detail and complimentary colour partnerships that work fabulously in vintage and contemporary home interiors. From eye-catching wall coverings to subtle accessories we take a look at the easiest ways to introduce this on trend pattern into your home.
Walls
Wallpaper is as popular as ever when it comes to adding colour and pattern to the home and with such a wide range of designs available on the high street you can transform a plain feature wall into a visual focal point without any great expense or mess within the home. Bold and colourful chevron designs look great in modern living rooms or kitchen areas while thinner and more neutral designs will give a subtle hint of pattern that looks amazing in bedroom and dressing room areas. This pattern is a great way to showcase a monochrome interior colour scheme creating a contrasting clean cut pattern that is sophisticated and chic. If you are opting to showcase this pattern in a bathroom or kitchen area then you can select thin, oblong tiles and arrange them in a stylish chevron design as a worktop splash back or bath surround.
Fabrics
If you’re not ready to fully redecorate your home but fancy a change in colour and pattern then a simple change of cushions, curtains or rug can completely change the overall appearance of your chosen interior. Cushions are available in almost every colour and print and a chevron design will look great against a plain seating area for a visual ‘zoning’ of pattern. This idea can also be used in your curtains with a bold, chevron design fabric acting as a textural alternative to a wallpapered feature wall. Bold, vibrant colours will look great in a modern or minimal home interior while simpler and subtle chevron lines will give a classier boutique look that will look beautiful in pastel colour palettes, greys and creams.
Upholstery
Patterned upholstery has been a staple feature of interior design across the ages with a simple print or motif adding detail and elegance to an otherwise plain furniture item or seating area. A single occasional chair provides a great way of adding a burst of pattern within a bedroom or living room area and a chevron pattern will give a fresh and eye-catching finish to an ornate French sofa or even a retro tub chair for a more contemporary 50s style. A classic, chevron patterned, chaise lounge will look amazing in a dressing room or bedroom area and will give a glamorous yet funky feel to a tired or out dated item. If you have an old ottoman that has seen better days then try your hand at some DIY re-upholstering. Using a staple gun and some fresh chevron fabric you can envelope your old item and give it a new and expensive look that is personalised and tailored to your specific tastes and decor.
Accessories
For me a room without accessories is an unfinished one. A lack of accessories within an interior space can create a stark and unloved feel that lacks a certain stylish touch and visual appeal. Chevrons make a great pattern for home accessories as they can be placed together or mixed and matched with plain items for a complimentary yet varied look. Vases, bowls and crockery look great in this fresh design and a bold colour selection will add an uplifting ambiance to even the blandest of home interiors. Wall art and notice boards can be hung against a neutral wall to create a focalised area of pattern that can be reflected in other aspects of your fabrics and accessories. A cool combination of blue and white chevrons looks wonderful on bathroom accessories and can be further accentuated with your towel and bath mat designs.
Furniture
Chevron patterned furniture will create a depth of colour and pattern that can be used in a subtle form as a furniture set or as a statement single item for more bold and vibrant designs. It you love the finish of natural wood then try to select items that feature a herringbone design with inlayed slices of wood that form a subtle chevron pattern across the drawer fronts or table top areas. For a painted finish then why not try your hand at some DIY furniture design and paint your current furniture items with a simplistic slick of plain paint and then accentuate the tops, sides or panels with a thick or thin chevron design (this can be easily achieved using masking tape and a smaller artists paint brush). If you already have a selection of painted furniture that you do not wish to repaint then why not take some slices of chevron wallpaper and line your drawer inners or drawer sides for a pop of pattern that is subtle and stylish.
