One of the most popular home trends for 2017 is INDUSTRIAL KITCHENS that will create character and style in both modern and traditional homes. This trend combines a variety of interior features to create a sleek yet cosy kitchen area that will add some designer flair to your home.
One of the staple elements of an industrial kitchen is the mix and match of materials and finishes that create visual texture and variation across the room. Exposed brick or stone walls can be mixed with brushed or polished metals to give a contrasting look that is complementary and rugged. Walls can be kept in their natural bare finishes or painted with simple neutral colours such as white, cream or grey for a refined and modern look. Subway style wall tiles or cork tiles will create a tactile finish that looks great above a cooker or sink. Metals such as steel, chrome, copper and brass add character and industrial charm to the chosen space and look great across accessories as well as traditional farmhouse style sinks and draining boards.
Concrete is another perfect material for making the most of an industrial kitchen interior. Polished concrete floors will complement the rustic decor and can be coordinated with some smooth concrete worktops that will bring together space for a chic designer finish. Metal worktops will also look great within this trend with muted, brushed style steel or copper creating a metallic focal point within the space. Slate or flagstone flooring will create scaled back factory-style ruggedness with a hint of country farmhouse interior charm. Add a central metal cage style light to the kitchen interior or create a zoned area of lighting by handing some copper or steel style pendulum lights above a central island or dining table.
Opt for a mix and match of cupboard designs or stick to a single material that can be clashed with your worktops and accessories. For a natural and rustic look then select some chunky wooden cupboards and drawers in warm oak, smoky beech or reclaimed woods that will give a cosy yet masculine feel to the kitchen area. If you prefer a more modern look then select some matt black, charcoal or grey cupboards that can be accentuated with brushed steel bar handles for a hint of industrial sleekness. Kitchen islands are a great way of adding a bar style seating area to your kitchen interior and can be partnered with heavy metal industrial stools, metal Eames style bar stools or classic wooden seating for a more rustic interior finish.
Accessories in an industrial kitchen can be selected from both modern industrial and classic rustic styles. Opt for metal fixtures such as taps, basket style shelving, toasters and kettles and mix and match with distressed wood chopping boards, wall plaques and chalkboards for a diverse array of decor. Opt for classic farmhouse style ovens such as AGA’s or choose a sleeker, more modern design featuring brushed steel or copper finishes. Retro style fridge freezers such as those from Smeg will look wonderful nestled in the corner of your kitchen area with colours such as matt black, silver or grey complementing the overall look of the room. Ensuring a perfect mix of both modern and classic items and accessories will ensure that the finished look is authentic and stylish.
