Mid-Century Modern Interior Design has never really gone out of fashion. It works well in both modern and traditional home interiors and is easy on the eye! By combining some key furniture, pieces, accessories and soft furnishings you can create a look that is eye-catching and appealing.
Mid-century furniture was designed to bring style to the masses however nowadays it has become quite the collector’s item. It tops the list of must have retro furniture designs and works really well in a wide variety of homes. The curved and angular forms of mid-century furniture create an eye-catching finish within the home and statement sofas and chairs can be upholstered in natural linens or bold and bright fabrics for the ultimate in vintage interior design.
From the 1950s onwards paint palettes began to become more adventurous with more vibrant colours being available from paint suppliers. To create a classic mid-century design, opt for bold primary colours (blues and yellows were a favourite) and use to paint your walls or incorporate them into a bold geometric wallpaper or patterned upholstery, cushions and curtains.
Mid-century interior design placed a huge emphasis on practicality and function. This period saw a massive rise in storage style furniture items that had plenty of space for all your household nik naks. Opt for a large shelving area with cupboards, spacious sideboards or statement tv cabinets with shelf style surrounds and cabinet doors.
The sculptured chair was one of the key pieces of any mid-century home and these pieces make a great feature in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. They perfectly combined curved seating areas with natural wood accents and could be upholstered in a wide variety of bold, neutral, plain or patterned upholstery to co-ordinate or mix and match with your chosen space.
Slimline furniture was another key aspect of mid-century homes as the aim was to ensure the maximum use of space within the home. Narrow bookcases and display cabinets could be slotted seamlessly into alcove areas while small chests of drawers and bedside tables could fit neatly beside a classic wooden bed frame.
Retro floral wallpaper will create a bold statement that brings together a plethora of design ideas from mid-century interior design. Abstract and geometric style flowered wallpaper can be displayed in an array of primary colours as well as muted yellow, orange and brown for a more classic vintage inspired design.
Bold retro patterned fabrics make a great addition to any mid-century interior design and can range from bright bold floral patterns to geometric and swirled designs that are sure to create a focal point against even the plainest of interior backdrop. Use in mix and match patterns across your upholstery, cushions, curtains, rugs, bedding and lamp shades to create a plethora of colour and print within your home.
