Neon Home Interiors

Many people shy away from NEON colour schemes as they are regularly considered as being tacky or overpowering but this season has seen a huge rise in bold and punchy neon interior design ideas that create a bright and cheery ambiance in any room. Neon colours don’t have to be used all over the room (to avoid a cheesy disco look) but can be used in accented areas to create ‘pops’ of colour that will compliment the layout of your space.

Neon cushions are a great way if introducing this trend into your home as it does not require any complex or expensive redecoration and allows you to concentrate your chosen colour to a specific interior area. For a sleek and modern look then take a selection of  plain cushions in a variety of classic neon shades such as fuchsia, yellow, lime and blue or create a formation of ombre cushions based on various shades of the same neon colour. Bold geometric shapes, stripes or chevrons work really well in neon, white and black colour palettes while neon and metallic silver and gold create a more glamorous and feminine visual finish.

Coloured upholstery is a perfect solution for introducing a vibrant colour into your interior if you are not quite brave enough to dive in head first with paint or wallpaper. A simple sofa or armchair will look fabulous in plain neon upholstery and will create a visual impact in a minimal interior space. For a more artistic and contemporary style then opt for abstract ‘paint splash’ effect fabrics with a white or black background to emphasise the neon colour flecks. If you love retro style interior design then a selection of neon 1960s style printed fabrics will look amazing on a vintage egg chair or beanbag for a laid back and stylish design.

If you are looking to update a dining or kitchen area then why not transform some of your old stools or dining chairs with a lick of neon paint that will give an instant modern update to your interior space. When painting wood make sure you sand the surface first to remove any varnish or use paint stripper to remove any stain that may have been applied to the exterior of the wood. Prime the surface and then apply three coats of neon wood paint in thin coats, allowing each coat to dry in between applications. Opt for bright neon yellow, highlighter green, aluminous pink or blue and either choose one main colour or a mix and match on each chair for a fun and funky design.

A single feature wall or alcove space will look great decorated in a block of neon colour or you can opt for neon wallpaper in retro print patterns or geometric designs that will create a striking focal point in your chosen room. Alternatively for a more sophisticated, designer feel in your interior then select a large piece of neon wall art that can be hung against a plain white or black painted feature wall for added impact. Choose a single large canvas on a chimney breast or alcove area or for longer or slimmer walls then hand a linear or triptych formation of pictures featuring the same colour tone and matching styles to create a burst of illuminating colour.
