Speakeasy inspired interior design brings together the rich and glamorous features of Art Deco and combines them with the masculine industrialism of the prohibition era to create a distinct interior look that is rich and stylish. This look works particularly well in living room, dining rooms and kitchen areas and is the perfect design for those who love to entertain.
Opt for deep and rich colour schemes that will recreate the alluring underground nature of the speakeasy. Dark black and grey tones work well with shimmering metallic chrome and gold accents or opt for rich chocolate and caramel tones that will compliment the industrial natural materials and finishes. Opt for ornate Art Deco inspired wallpaper for a elegant and flamboyant finish or alternatively select some natural wood or brick effect wallpaper for a more rustic and masculine finish.
Lighting plays an important role in creating the dark and mysterious ambiance of a traditional speakeasy. Create zoned areas of ambient light within the room leaving some areas in shadow and some highlighted for socialising. For a hint of period elegance opt for brass table lamps and floor lamps with ornate Art Deco shades or opulent designed wall sconces that can be placed in strategic positions next to your seating areas and tables. Alternatively opt for industrial style lighting such as open caged ceiling lights, lights linked by ropes and pulleys or even light shades made from old cut glass decanters that will look great hung above a sofa, breakfast bar or dining table.
Opt for comfortable and traditional seating options placed in group formation within the room. Chesterfield style sofas are the perfect choice for a speakeasy interior as their masculine design and practical comfort will fit perfectly within both glamorous and industrial settings. Opt for simple black or brown leather for a rugged finish or splash out on rich dark blue or red velvet upholstery for a more flamboyant design that will look great on large armchairs or a carved chaise lounge. Opt for chunky mahogany or walnut tables or polished and lacquered Art Deco bars and dressers and team with polished brass or copper stools and side tables for a mix and match of prohibition styles. Don’t forget to include an all important gramophone on a side table or sideboard to create a relaxed and social ambiance in your chosen space.
The finishing touch to any speakeasy interior is accessories. The more nik naks and items you can display across the room the more cosy and authentic your design will feel. Place a selection of shelves, a dresser or a trolley style brass bar within your chosen room and use this to display an array of drinks bottles such as whiskey and gin alongside co-ordinating cut glass decanters, tumblers and cocktail shakers for a classic and glamorous finish. Art Deco ornaments and accessories will look great displayed along a sideboard, fireplace or dresser and will create visual detail within the room. Select a large Art Deco mirror that should be hung in a central position within the room and team with ornately carved photo frames with old black and white or sepia photos that will create an authentic period feel within the room.
