Until now, terracotta has been reserved for rustic style eastern and Mediterranean homes. This season however, terracotta accessories and decor are becoming a favourite choice in both classic and contemporary home interiors due to its cosy and versatile look. This natural material can be used alone for a rich and traditional look or teamed with more modern materials for a mix and match of interiors styles.
The obvious choice for introducing this trend into your home is with a selection of terracotta tiles that can be used to adorn both walls and floors in your chosen interior space. For a traditional and cosy country feel, select some rough edged terracotta tiles and place on the floors in a mix and match arrangement of shapes and sizes. Team these with solid, chunky oak furniture for co-ordinating warmth and style or sleek modern furniture for a contrasting visual finish. If you have a traditional style kitchen with cream or wooden cupboards then create a visual focal point with some Spanish or Moroccan style terracotta tiles for a traditional interior look
Lighting plays a huge role in creating a visual ambiance in your chosen interior space. Terracotta makes a great choice for both ceiling lights and lamps as its neutral, earthen finish will compliment a wide variety of interior colour schemes. For a traditional feel, select dome or orb shaped terracotta lights featuring an ornate filigree style finish that creates a classic Moroccan style feel in your home. If you wish to create a more modern look in your chosen interior then select a grouped formation of pendulum lights in a mix and match of terracotta and white glazed shades for a crisp and minimal feel with a hint of traditional warmth. Terracotta lamp bases and lamp shades will create a classic focal point on a side table or bedside and can be teamed with copper, gold or rose gold accents for a more glamorous look and finish.
Terracotta pots and urns make a great feature in any room of the home and can be displayed as standalone items or as holders for an array of plants and flowers. Traditional terracotta flower pots are a great way of housing some indoor botanicals to add a splash of colour to your chosen room. They are the perfect choice for creating a fresh garden inspired look within your home. Opt for indoor plants such as small cacti for miniature pots or large and elegant umbrella plants, palms or yuccas for larger planters. These pots can be displayed on shelving, sideboards and windowsills or placed in the corner of the room to create a visual focal point in your space. Mediterranean style urns look fabulous placed in group formations along a sideboard or as a centrepiece on dining table and can be accentuated with bright and bold flowers and plants for a splash of colour against the neutral terracotta.
If you don’t wish to cover an entire wall with terracotta tiles then why not select some wall art that will create a focal point on a plain painted wall. If you wish to create a sense of space and light in your chosen room then select a large rectangular or circular wall mirror with a cosy terracotta frame and display on a large feature wall, chimney breast or alcove area. A mosaic picture made from small terracotta tiles will create depth and detail in your interior space and invokes the warmth and rustic nature of a Mediterranean home. Wall clocks are a great way of including a specific trend in your home interior. Opt for traditional styles for a relaxed and laid back feel or a contemporary sculptural design that will look great in a minimal or bold interior decor.
