WABI SABI is set to be 2018s biggest interior design trend. Never heard of it? Well neither had we, so we decided to do some research into this new and interesting trend to find out how you can adopt this style in your own home interiors and what sort of look and finish can be created with its design elements.
Wabi Sabi is a Japanese world view that centres on finding beauty in imperfection and authenticity. Using this view as a basis for interior design means creating a space that is uncluttered and minimal in its appearance with items and accessories that are based on function, natural beauty and personal sentimentality as oppose to superficial style and appearance. This look should celebrate modesty and stripped back beauty with colour schemes that are neutral, such as white, cream and earthen tones that create a calm and relaxed ambiance within the room. Rid your home of pointless items that have little or no function or are taking up space for aesthetic purposes only. Not only does this reduce the clutter in our homes but will ultimately save money on purchasing unneeded items and accessories and will be kinder to the planet and the local community through the purchase of sustainable, natural and artisan items.
Imperfect beauty and authenticity is a key element in a Wabi Sabi interior design. Wear and tear and loving use of items, furniture and soft furnishings should be celebrated as they are representative of the passing of time and history of the people that live within your home. Embrace the beauty in items with flaws, scratches and unrefined finishes or items that have meaning to your family such as antiques or handmade and artisan products. This look is far removed from the idea of creating a home that is like a staged set or showroom and is more about creating a home that is imprecise and minimal yet lived in. This change in view is said to create a more peaceful and serene living environment that provides a way of relieving stress and calming the mind.
To capture this look and way of living opt for items such as natural hand thrown pottery and crockery with flaws, marks and chips and worn or reclaimed furniture items with nicks, chips and worn edges and surfaces. Opt for throws, bedding and curtains in natural materials with flaws and creases that avoid linear and crisp lines and finishes. Avoid mass produced and disposable items and instead try and embrace old or hand-made items that have a story and background to tell and can be kept in your home for the remainder of your time and passed on to your family. Wabi Sabi focuses on the appreciation of all things natural so try and replace man made materials with natural ones such as wood, stone, wool and linen. These are materials that not only look good as new but can become more attractive and beautiful with age.
