Cool and calm interiors are a perfect way of creating a laid back sanctuary within your home interior. Soft colour tones, natural accessories and fabrics and an uncluttered finish will ensure that your chosen room will be both serene and stylish. WHITEWASHED finishes are set to be a huge trend for 2018 using a selection of wallpaper, furniture and fabrics that create this relaxed, Scandinavian inspired ambiance within your home.
If you fancy trying your hand at some creative DIY then you can create a whitewashed finish with your paint choices. Opt for soft and subtle tones and pick two hues that lie on the same tonal colour palette and are not too dissimilar in appearance. Firstly choose the darker of the two tones and apply this colour all over the wall as you normally would, using a brush or roller. Next take the lighter colour and mix with a little water or PVA to create a thinner paint mix that the first application. Using a crumpled up rough cloth, paper or sponge apply this thin paint mix in rough, swirled or dappled motions over the darker colour. Opt for simple natural colours such as cream, white and grey for a soft and subtle finish or select elegant pastel hues for a more feminine hint of colour. If this sounds like a lot of hassle then you could always opt for whitewash effect wallpaper that can be applied to all walls or a feature wall for a central visual impact. If you love the look and feel of a chalet or lodge style interior then you can decorate a feature wall with some white washed wooden cladding or panelling and co-ordinate with some painted walls in cool blues and greys or warm cream, mocha or taupe to create a fresh and cosy design that works particularly well in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.
Whitewashed furniture is sure to create a light and uplifting ambiance in any room of the home. The soft and refined finish will compliment a wide variety of colour schemes and can be used to create a natural sense of space in even the most compact of interior spaces. Opt for whitewashed wood furniture in soft whites and greys that will create a modern yet natural finish in your chosen room. A large whitewashed dining table, wardrobe or dresser can be displayed in a period carved design for a French chateau inspired finish or a sleek and modern design for a Scandinavian, alpine feel. These furniture items can be teamed with some white wash effect fabrics such as natural linen curtains and upholstery or opt for a more retro take on the whitewash effect with some swirled and marbled cushions and bedding that will look great against a simple neutral backdrop. Partner with simple white lighting, accessories and ornaments for a fresh and light interior finish.
